The 2007 MABUG Conference will be hosted by Virginia Tech in beautiful Blacksburg, VA, on October 8-9, 2007! Please
click the 2007 Conference link above for all the details!
At the MABUG Working Group Session at Summit 2007, the group agreed to expand the current steering committee
membership to all those who are listed as primary contacts for their institution, so we can broaden perspective and allow
the coordination of MABUG events to be more equally shared. If you have questions, or would like to be part of the
Steering Committee, please contact Troy Boroughs (tborough@richmond.edu).

The MABUG Birds-of-a-Feather session was held at Summit 2006 to a standing-room-only crowd. Thank you for
making the session so engaging! We probably could have talked for well more than an hour. For those who could
not attend, the BOF powerpoint is located here. Key topics included the 2006 MABUG Conference in Richmond,
the future of MABUG and SunGard HE's vision for supporting regional user group conferences, member updates,
and member concerns.
1) 2006 Conference: All you need to know is located here.
2) Future of MABUG and SunGard's "vision": Troy and Kerri were invited to Malvern by SunGard, along with
leadership from other user groups in the northeast, to discuss how SunGard can more effectively support the growing
number of grassroots user groups in the region. The pilot plan is for SunGard to organize and implement a northeast
regional conference this fall for clients in the New York/New England area. Depending on the success of the pilot
regional, SunGard would look at hosting a "Super Regional" in 2007, most likely in the Philadelphia area and serving
clients from Maine to North Carolina. SunGard asked us to bring back member feedback on this plan. We thank you for
your strong opinions shared at the BOF and have passed them on to SunGard. If you have anything to share, please
send your comments to Troy or Kerri.
3) Member updates: Many of our member institutions are upgrading to Banner 7.x, and we have several new
members who will be implementing in the next few months. The University of Richmond, by request, has posted
some Banner 7.x upgrade and training documentation here. A username and password are required to access the
documentation.
4) Member concerns: We are very fortunate to have a member of SunGard's Quality Advisory Council (QAC) in our
region! Ken Williams from Virginia Tech would like to hear your concerns and share them with SunGard, because
they are listening! Here is Ken's contact information:

At the MABUG Working Group Session at the 2004 conference, members came together to discuss the future of the
organization. The summary notes of the session are below. If you have any comments or suggestions, please direct
them to Kerri Chapman.
Each year at the MABUG conference (as well as at the MABUG birds-of-a-feather at Summit ), a MABUG Working
Group meets to:
- discuss the business of running MABUG
- ask for volunteer institutions to host upcoming MABUG conferences
- discuss issues that may be affecting multiple member institutions, and
- to speak with a unified voice to SCT.
This year, at GWU, the primary topic of the working group was whether or not MABUG should join SETA. The
proposedgoals of this "union" were to inherit an organizational structure, provide continuity from year to year,
and offload some ofthe logistical burdens for organizing the MABUG conference each year. After weighing the
pros / cons, the MABUG working group decided NOT to join SETA for these reasons:
- We want to keep MABUG small (150-300 people) to keep it manageable
- We want to keep MABUG local (VA-MD-NC area) to keep it affordable
- We want to keep MABUG focused on Banner and related products / technologies
However, we still wished to address some of the weaknesses inherent in the current MABUG organization:
- MABUG has no organizational structure
- The MABUG website does not have registration/e-commerce capabilities
- MABUG lacks continuity (logistics, lessons learned, policies, etc)
To address some of these concerns, we asked for volunteers to comprise a MABUG Steering Committee. We
thought
it was best to have.
- Members who hosted previous MABUG conferences (to pass on what they learned)
- Members who were going to host the upcoming MABUG conference
- Members who regularly attended MABUG conferences to provide continuity
The following people volunteered to be on the MABUG Steering Committee for 2005:
- Judy Ewart - W&M
- Fred Gillis - GWU
- Anders Hellstrom, David Kozoyed - ODU
- Dana Abbott - Mary Washington
- Lee Anne Hoppe - Va Tech
- Troy Boroughs, Lee Parker, Kerri Chapman - University of Richmond
This steering committee will have the following duties:
- Develop a MABUG conference planning calendar
- Encourage member institutions to participate and present at MABUG
- Document MABUG policies (e.g., to what extent is vendor participation allowed, etc)
- Improve the MABUG organization and its conferences
- Attend the yearly MABUG conference
In addition, the University of Richmond will attempt to develop a registration / e-commerce component for the MABUG
website to remove this yearly burden from the hosting school. We hope to have this in place for the next MABUG
conference in 2005 at ODU.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Thank you,
Troy Boroughs
